The OKI International School, one of the leading International schools in Sri Lanka recently celebrated its 15th anniversary school day on September 9. The event consisted of religious observances with the participation of clergy and school children singing the school anthem.
Addressing the 15th Anniversary celebration of the School, OKI Kaduwela, Principal, Richmond Suraweera said, “Over the last 15 years, the OKI International school has strived to gain a better quality of teaching and learning so as to support the students of the challenges presented with technology advancements and globalization.
OKI is among the first batch of schools that turned into a virtual platform during this Covid-19 pandemic providing opportunities for the needy with associations to encourage students to be part of such groups.
Suraweera further said that OKI international school offers the best possible education by helping them to lay a solid foundation to lead a fruitful life.
OKI International School was established in September 2006, with of branches in Wattala, Kaduwela, Biyagama, Kandana, Kiribathgoda and Negombo and offers classes for students from Play Group to A/L (Commerce Stream & Science Stream).
The school operates with a wide range of facilities ranging from a library, IT lab with Internet facilities and a well-equipped Science Lab which are utilised by classes up to A/L.
The school has arranged a plethora of associations and clubs such as English, Sinhala and Tamil Associations, Science and Commerce Associations, Prefects Unit, UN Club, Reading Club, Media and Broadcasting Club, Chess Club, Social Service Club, Aviation Club, Robotics Club, Debating Club, Gavel Club, Boys Scouts Unit, Cubs Scouts Unit and Girl Guides Unit for skill development of the students. In the field of extracurricular activities, the school also offers Swimming, Cricket, Netball, Basketball, Badminton, Karate, Table Tennis and Athletics for its students.
The school was founded by the late Don Lucian Nimal Saparamadu, born on January 8, 1955. He excelled in his education both Primary and Secondary at St. Anthony’s College, Wattala, and De Mazenod College, Kandana. He entered Technical College, Dehiwela in 1973 to follow a Draughtsman’s Course and in 1978 he assumed duties as a Trainee Telegraphist at Sri Lanka Telecom.
Like many other entrepreneurs, he had served in the state sector including Sri Lanka Telecom for over 25 years.
While serving the state, his attention was drawn to three important aspects in education: globalisation and its effects on Sri Lankan society, the recent technical and scientific developments in the world and the weaknesses of our educational system.
Most of the children belonging to middle-class families have been facing the problems and challenges created by the existing educational system.
The helmsman along with the impetus behind the progress, development, and achievements of OKI International School was its founder Chairman, the late Nimal Saparamadu. He had a great determination to elevate the school to greater heights and due to his tremendous efforts, commitment and dedication he accomplished his task and adapted a holistic and integrated learning approach in education.
The children were encouraged to recognise, appreciate and preserve the traditional values and rich culture of our motherland.
OKI International School was founded with 14 students and 2 teachers on September 7, 1998. Saparamadu , accomplished this task within a short period of time and OKI International School has developed into a well-known and reputed educational facility in the Island.
The current coordinating Principal of OKI Networking School is Mrs. Danum Abeysekera and Chairperson Mrs. Nirmala Saparamadu.
