Ever since the start of the pandemic and the trying time that ensued, the whole country and especially the national Hospitality and Tourism industry have been greatly affected. All the progressive ideas for Sri Lanka to be the #1 tourism hotspot had to be put on hold. Yet, as said industry is one of our main sources of income and contributes to our international branding, we should never give up or give in to the pandemic.
In fact, we are now in a position of better understanding to live alongside the pandemic. Our ideas can be adjusted to adhere to the health and safety precautions in place and ensure protection for all.
For the students of MSI’s Bachelor in Hospitality and Tourism Management,instead of going ahead with a generic, indistinctive event, they had plannedon one set to stand out; with MSU Malaysia President Professor Tan Sri Dr Mohd Shukri & MSU Vice-Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Junaina has patrons; support from MSU Post Graduate Centre Senior Vice-President Professor Dr Ali Khatibi and Management and Science Institute (MSI) Director Mr Sam Peiris; leadership and guidance by Event Management lecturer Mr Suranga Tennakoon; and participation by MSI management, administration,and academic staff.
Its primary aim being to raise awareness and bring forth enlightenment on the future of Sri Lanka’s Hospitality and Tourism industry,the event is a programme for the A-Level students of St. Sebastian’s Central College in Katuneriya; who had cited interest in getting to learn more about the industry and build a professional career in it.
The event, which is also based on the 4th Sustainable Development Goal ‘Quality Education’, is to be held in two sessions; a presentation and a discussion in the first session, and a live demonstration in the second.
This would be an opportunity to update all on the current situation and illuminate the way towards a brighter future for the Hospitality and Tourism industry. With four main areas of focus – travel and tour operations, front office operations, and F&B operations among them,the students shall be guided on their Hospitality and Tourism career pathways and become better equipped for career-making decisions later.
It is our express hope that in conducting this event with all the SOPs observed and adhered to,the outcomes include sparks of hope re-ignited for the industry, and for others to attain similar success in a not-too-distant future.
For the students of St Sebastian’s, our expectedtake-away outcomes are:
• A better understanding of the inner-workings of the hospitality and tourism (H&T) industry;
• An increased interest in the H&T industry;
• Eradication of pessimistic ideas about being in the H&T industry amid the pandemic;
• Inspiration to achieve career goals and revive the national H&T industry.
Skills expected to be gained and aid progress in future professional H&T careers include:
• Presentation and organizational skills;
• Effective knowledge sharing;
• Feasibility planning for the industry post- coronavirus crisis;
• Crisis handling and management;
• Creativity and innovation;
Post-event, a previous Corporate
Social Responsibility (CSR) Project by the students, who had planted over 200 mangrove seedlings at Anawilundawaa few months back on the 19th of September2020, will continue. The second phase of the project,aimed at supporting the adage of small changes leading to big impacts,has been designed to deliver the 14th and the 15th Sustainable Development Goals; respectively for Life Below Water and Life On Land.
The first meeting to set the wheels in motion into kick-starting the event was conducted at Management and Science Institute (MSI) on the 9th of February, 2021. Here’s to success for all,and a positive change turning the thickness of uncertainty.
