Why Data Scientists?
Data is everywhere. In fact, the amount of digital data that exists is growing at a rapid rate, doubling every two years, and changing the way we live. An article by Forbes states that data is growing faster than ever before and by 2020, about 1.7 megabytes of new information will be created every second for every human being on the planet. Data Science is the combination of machine learning, mathematics, programming, problem solving, capturing data in ingenious ways, the ability to look at things differently, and the activity of cleansing, preparing and aligning the data. Data creates wealth at no cost in many industries in the world today.  Hence it is high time to develop Data Scientists to take our country to its next level of heights.
To become a Big Data Professional: it is necessary to develop analytical skills, creativity, mathematics and statistical skills, computer science, machine learning, data intuition and business skills. Data science is a skill in very high demand. The starting salary for a data scientist is well above average when compared to other professions. Your horizons get broader and you get career opportunities from multiple industries and domains. This is because data is at the heart of everything. By manipulating data extracting patterns, you can direct a company along a successful path. The global demand for Data Scientists is growing exponentially and Harvard Business Review (HBR) identified it as the most sexiest job of the 21st century and IBM predicts demand for Data Scientists will soar 28 percent by 2020 (Forbes).
Data Science career opportunities
A Data Scientist, according to Harvard Business Review (HBR), is a high-ranking professional with the training and curiosity to make discoveries in the world of Big Data. It comes as no surprise that Data Scientists are sought-after professionals in the Big Data Analytics and IT industry. With experts predicting that huge volumes of data will be in existence by 2020, Data Science career opportunities will only shoot through the roof. Shortage of skilled professionals in a world, which is increasingly turning to data for decision-making, has also led to the huge demand for Data Scientists in start-ups as well as well-established companies. A McKinsey Global Institute study states that the US alone will face a shortage of about 190,000 professionals with deep analytical skills. With the Big Data wave showing no signs of slowing down, there is a rush among global companies to hire Data Scientists to tame their business-critical Big Data.
Data Scientist salary trends
A report by Glassdoor shows that Data scientists lead the pack for the best jobs in America. The report indicates that the median salary for a Data Scientist is $91,470 in the USA and there are over 2,300 job openings. The average Data Scientist salaries for job postings in the US are 80% higher than average salaries for all job postings nationwide, as of May 2019. The same trends are visible in all other countries, including Sri Lanka.
Industrial training on Data Science
NIBM signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dialog Axiata PLC, to partner in developing a Business Analytics Centre (BAC), which would cater to the effective and efficient functioning of numerous processes in the public and the private sectors of the country through the use and analyses of big data with the advancements of technology.
This partnership would help students learn best practices of Data Science using real time data in leading industries in Sri Lanka.
