With that requirement in aim, the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) has taken a challenging step in 2012 and became the first State University which offers Graduate Studies in pharmacy through the “Distance Learning Mode”. The Department of Pharmacy was also established under the Faculty of Health Sciences at OUSL in advance to fulfill this objective. It opens up the opportunity to get the standard degree qualification at any age while working and even with other commitments at any age through dedication.
Currently, the Department of Pharmacy is offering the Bachelor of Pharmacy Honors (BPharm Hons) Degree Program aligned with the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) standards. It is a four-year degree program with a 120 credit value which is conducted in the English medium.

Limited numbers of face-to-face contact sessions (eg: lectures/ discussions) are conducted by qualified lecturers in the field to support students in clarifying subject matter and problems.
Attendance for practical classes, conducted in well-equipped and facilitated laboratories, is compulsory.
Pharmacists who were registered with the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) with a Diploma in Pharmacy or Certificate of Proficiency in Pharmacy or Certificate of Efficiency in Pharmacy can follow the degree program after passing a selection test for competency.

These students may qualify in following postgraduate degrees in pharmacy, such as the Master in Pharmacy (MPharm), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) at local or foreign universities after completing the degree since the OUSL BPharm degree has been designed to meet the local and international standards and requirements.
