An Interview with Prashan Viranga Alahakoon- a clinical Perfusionist
Prashan is a young Graduate who decided to pursue his Degree in Biomedical Science offered by the Management and Science University through MSI.
We interviewed Prashan and asked him about his fantastic learning journey and what made him choose The Management and Science University, where he has just graduated from.
To inspire other students to study at MSI, Prashan accepted to share his story and tell us more about how he became a student of MSI.
How did your journey at MSI begin?
Just after my A/L’s, I was undecided on which University to pick, which study area to pick, and when I came to MSI, the student counsellors explained all the programs well to me.
They also took time to check on my interests and offered me a secure payment scheme which reduced the financial burden on my parents.
How did you decide what academic subject you wanted to study?
The student counsellors from MSI had a chat with me, and since I was always interested in Science at school and loved to work in a hospital, they recommended the Biomedical stream where I can develop my career as a scientist which was the best option for me.
How did you look for a university? Why did you decide on MSI?
I am very sceptical with rankings. MSI is fully affiliated and administrated by MSU Malaysia which is one of Asia’s QS Ranked Universities and has many awards and recognition around the world, including recognition on SLMC and UGC Sri Lanka. This, coupled with the affordable fee and flexible payment plans, helped me decide on MSI Colombo. They also gave me the options of studying in Sri Lanka, Malaysia or any of their partner universities. So, considering all this, I decided to enrol at MSI.
What were the main challenges you had to face at MSI?
Like any study program, a (Hons) Degree is something that you have to put in a lot of effort, focus and determination into.
Yes, there were challenges with assignment deadlines, research works and practical sessions, but my fellow students, Program manager and Professors have been beneficial though and react quickly to problems.
What are the three things you like most at MSI?
Very personal study environment, with a ratio of 10 students per Lecturer. It facilitates much more in-depth discussions, and the students are very well qualified.
The dedication and expertise of the Lecturers, and most are Lecturers and Professionals from the industry. We have many external Doctors and Professors from other Universities and top-tier companies to get a different perspective on their operations.
The Students Union and societies that MSI has, which organises much fun and educational programs are also very interesting.
Describe the teaching style, classes, extra activities and facilities provided by MSI. The teaching style is very open, with an adequate number of students in a class. You will attain solid foundations in both the Biological and the Medical Sciences through extensive theoretical knowledge and advanced laboratory skills. Throughout your studies, you will be guided by our lecturers and industry professionals and will be engaged in collaborative group projects, discussions and presentations.
To enhance your employability, you will undertake an industrial placement at the end of the program to gain experience in the working environment of local hospitals or biomedical companies. The most importantly, we had a three weeks education in MSU Malaysia during our final year, where we were trained under many challenging aspects of Molecular Biology, Pharmacology and Histology.
It was an international experience where not only we learnt our subjects, but we were able to mix with international students in many varieties of activities.
Were you able to obtain any industrial exposure as an undergraduate at MSI?
Yes, of course, I was fortunate to obtain two internships during my time as an undergraduate one as a trainee MLT in a leading Private Hospital in Wattala where I was trained under Haematology, Pathology, Microbiology and Biochemistry departments.
In my second internship, I was able to gain experience as a Research Assistant in a leading Pharmaceutical organisation in Colombo in drug manufacturing and quality control.
Is there any research experience you gained from the University?
I did an individual research project for one year on “Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices on First Aid among Advanced Level Students in Government Schools in the Gampaha Educational Zone, Sri Lanka”.
Also, I was fortunate to get selected to present my research findings in an International conference held at the Postgraduate Institute of Science at the University of Peradeniya in 2018.
How is life after graduating, any regrets?
Deciding to study Biomedical Science at MSI is the best decision that I have taken in my life.
After the completion of the degree, I got the opportunity to work in a leading private hospital in Colombo, as a Clinical Perfusionist in cardiology surgical unit, which I think is the best opportunity that I have ever got from my academic qualification gained through the degree awarded by MSU.”
MSI offers the following Diploma programs leading to the Bachelors (Hons) Degree through MSU.
nHospitality and Tourism
nHuman Capital Management
