On the teaching side, students experience exciting and engaging lectures that focus on providing hands-on lab experience and interactive classroom lectures.
Students will have access to state-of-the-art research facilities that provide the infrastructure to support their research interests to investigate diverse areas of the chemical sciences including, nanomaterials and food chemistry.Through thesewell equipped labs, students are able to gain experience in modern experimental and theoretical chemistry with access to world-class instrumentation facilities. Throughout the program, students will receive intensive laboratory instruction on the transformation and safe handling of chemical compounds, as well as hands-on training in advanced instrumental techniques. On the research side, students are involved in a number of exciting projects in various research areas.
Therefore students will not only develop an understanding of theoretical chemistry, but will also be taught how these theories function in a practical environment. This course of study is very hands-on, with small classes and intensive faculty-student interaction, taught through lectures and seminars, as well as in a lab environment, where students will be exposed to conduct research and collect their own data for theirassessments. They will also develop strong critical and analytical thinking skills, advanced information acquisition and management skills, as well as precise attention to detail.

Speaking of the career opportunities available in the industry, Mr.Sadin De Silva (Lecturer, Faculty of Science) stated” Chemistry is truly the “central science” of today. New breakthroughs in fields such as genetics, biochemistry, medicine, materials science, forensics, nanotechnology, drug discovery, the environment and next-generation computer hardware are all driven by chemistry. It is likely that chemical sciences will be increasingly required to solve challenges in energy and climate change, food production and clean water. Chemistry will therefore have an increased role in biochemistry and the pharmaceutical industry. Accordingly, chemical production will remain at high levels as will chemical research. Therefore, whilst chemistry is a vital science today, it will be even more so in tomorrow’s world. More than ever, the importance of science and science-based jobs to create a sustainable future for the planet is being recognized. As the world changes and new jobs emerge, the knowledge and skills that chemical scientists possess will ensure that they are always in high demand. As such,Biotechnology graduates with will increasingly move into areas such as molecular biology, biochemistry, genetic engineering, environmental monitoring, forensic science, food science and green chemistry.
