ECU Earns Top 100 Seed for Sports Research

ECU has been ranked in the top 100 for sports science in the 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject, released on 28 February 2018.
The University also achieved a top 250 ranking for Education for the sixth year in a row and a top 300 ranking for Psychology.
ECU’s sports science researchers have worked with some of Australia’s most elite athletes and sporting teams, including the West Coast Eagles, Perth Glory, Orica Green Edge (now Mitchelton-Scott) and Surfing Australia.
Internationally, the University has links with several Olympic training centres, and NFL, Malaysian sevens rugby and Sri Lankan sports teams.
Some of the diverse research projects include strength training for physical performance and health, aerial performance in surfing, sprint cycling, eccentric exercise, dehydration in mixed martial arts, and the biomechanics of ballet dancers.
“These rankings reflect what individual athletes and major sporting teams have known for some time, that ECU is one of the world’s best universities in the field of sports science,” ECU Vice-Chancellor Professor Steve Chapman said.
ECU was also the first university in the world to offer studies in Australian Rules Football, launching the Bachelor of Science (Sports Science and Football) in 2011. The course also offers the option to specialise in football (soccer).
Last year the University signed a 10-year agreement with the West Coast Eagles to develop the ECU High Performance Centre at the new Lathlain Park training ground.
The 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject rankings is based on academic reputation, employer reputation, and research outcomes including scientific citations and h-index.
